WI Program WI First Meeting WI 21 Years WI 50 Years

Spreyton WI

We are a fun WI, with a wide variety of speakers and outings, usually with a good supper at the end!  In January we are visiting Fir Trees by invitations of Ann Winsor, for a Film Evening.

In February we are going to Martins’ shop in Okehampton for a demonstration on cutting up meat.

We also achieve success sometimes!   We are the current holders of the Red Earth Rose Bowl for Group competitions for the best chocolate sponge!

NEW MEMBERS ARE WELCOME

The first WI meeting was held in Spreyton schoolroom at 7.15pm on Thursday March 9th 1950, with Mrs Masefield VCO (Voluntary County Organizer) officiating. 29 possible members were present - a large number for a small village. In those days there were fewer other interests for women, so numbers were higher and the average age lower.

Lorna Endacott (then Tremlett) was a founder member. Alma Redstone was the founder treasurer and first President was a Phyllis Eldon. Meetings were transferred to the newly erected Village Hall on Thursday December 13th 1951.

In 2003 members meet in the Committee room of the village hall. The average age is now probably nearer 60, but no-one can accuse members of being staid. Speakers cover a wide range of subjects. The current President is Phyllis Tucker.

The Golden Anniversary was celebrated in March 2000 with a party in the hall, inviting past and present members and friends from DFWI.
