OPENING CEREMONY 23rd JANUARY 2004 DAVEYS PLATT, SPREYTON

Daveys Platt, Spreyton

Daveys Platt represents a major achievement for the village of Spreyton, as well as West Devon Homes. This project marks the 75th new home built by the Company in less than four years.

Providing the first affordable housing development for families in Spreyton for a generation, Daveys Platt comprises four units of affordable housing as follows:

* 2 x 2 bed, 4 person houses

* 2 x 3-bed, 5 person houses

The project is the result of the hard work, commitment and persistence of the Parish Council, which, with the assistance of the Community Council of Devon, organised a  Community Appraisal in 1999. The outcome, published in 2000, found that a number of people were leaving the village due to the lack of affordable housing options locally, or within travelling distance.

Recognising the need for affordable homes in the village for local people, the assistance of a local landowner was invaluable in ensuring the land price assisted in enabling the project to proceed. West Devon Homes and West Devon Borough Council identified funding and made certain the project went ahead via the 'exceptions site' planning policy, ensuring that the completed accommodation would remain as homes for local families.

West Devon Borough Council, together with the Housing Corporation, provided grant funding of approximately £170,000. West Devon Homes has raised the balance under private funding to ensure delivery of this £340.000 development.

The project was built in partnership with Midas Homes Limited, with whom West Devon Homes have another 18 units under construction in North Tawton. Architects Ford, Gilpin & Riley, from Exeter, designed the houses at Daveys Platt. The houses are distinctive in their design, and have been well received.
